Late 18th or Early 19th C. European Heraldic Applique (#A021326 | 20 x 20")

Late 18th or early 19th C. European heraldic raised metallic embroidered applique, with a crowned shield. The towered castle implies Spain and the kingdom of Castile. It is one of the most recognizable motifs of the Iberian area and suggests a connection to Spanish identity or to tis influence elsewhere. The crowned crest and castle motif evoke Iberian heraldry, suggestive of influence of place and power rather than a family name. It's more of an architectural identity most likely from a banner or ceremonial hanging. richly worked in metallic thread. This wonderful crest has been carefully removed from a distressed red velvet fragment, and reapplied by hand to an early 19th C. hand woven flax linen.  Down filled.
